A Note on Nerdfighters

fishingboatproceeds:

newyorker:

In her article about transgender teens in the magazine this week, Margaret Talbot quotes Annette Bening and Warren Beatty’s son Stephen calling himself, among other things, a “nerd fighter.” It might escape the average reader’s notice that this term is more than the sum of its parts. In the teen-age population, “nerdfighter” (as a compound word) has a very specific meaning and etymology. Primarily, it identifies the teen-ager in question as a follower of John Green…

Michelle Dean on John Green and the nerdfighters: http://nyr.kr/XJiBAo

I really loved this story, because it articulates a lot of things that we’ve been trying to say for years about why we love nerdfighteria, and why we aren’t particularly interested in defining the word nerdfighter, and how proud we are to have smart, thoughtful, and engaged people like Stephen call themselves nerdfighters.

This is such a really nice article.

the more everyone knows just what a nerdfighter is, the more the definition hardens. The most beautiful and intriguing parts of any identity tend to be the fluid ones. And the young people nerdfighteria attracts, after all, are often as confused and lonely and frustrated as they are because they don’t fit into the boxes, a problem that can hardly be resolved by creating a new one.
Michelle Dean, on the New Yorker’s web site, succinctly making a point that I’ve been trying to make for ages about why we don’t want to be on TV or have nerdfighteria be a “mainstream phenomenon.” (via fishingboatproceeds)

A while back I made a video translating dance songs into English. In that video, I asked Nerdfighters to go to this thread and post what language they speak. Then, an amazing thing happened. A linguist and nerdfighter named Hedvig compiled a quite complicated spreadsheet of all the languages spoken in Nerdfighteria. Hedvig can say it better than me though so…

In case you’re interested, the languages spoken by members of nerdfighteria are roughly 110, most of them belong to the some of largest language families of the world: indo-european, afro-asiatic, niger-congo (only bantu), sino-tibean or austronesian.
The third largest language family in terms of number of languages is Trans-New-Guinea and no language was represented from that group (no wonder, it doesn’t have that many speakers).
These six families cover 64% of all languages and are spoken by 85% of the worlds population, as native tongues that is.
In this case most nerdfighters speak one language from these six families that is very big (like russian, malay or portuguese), so even though we don’t speak all languages in these five families we still represent roughly 72% of the worlds population. This is interesting when we think about the fact that we speak 1.6% of the languages, but still we cover so many speakers. Languages of the world are distributed a big like Zips Law, most have extremely low number of speakers and a few are extremely huge.

So Cool! Thanks so much to Hedvig for putting this together. You can see the full spreadsheet here, and if you speak a language that is not on the list, just let us know in the chat.

I just want to be a linguist sooooo much.

Congratulations Hank and John!

There were a lot of these to choose from to reblog, but I’m picking this one because the only other tab open is Fishing Boat Proceeds.
This is obviously a really huge feeling, something that doesn’t really make sense, but also feels perfectly natural…and of course totally impossible. John and I owe a lot to a lot of people. To each person who ever cared enough to subscribe, to share a video on facebook, to email one to a friend, to donate to the P4A, to make a video response, to comment, to rate our videos with five (now non-existant) stars. To try something new, to care about creators as well as creations. To want to be a part of something unusual and weird.
To every person who was a little too excited about Accio Deathly Hallows or who dragged their friend over to their computer to show them the cool, thing they found….even if their friend didn’t think it was, in fact, all that cool. To the teachers who show our videos in class. To everyone with a DFTBA tattoo, or a hanklerfish in your notebook. To the people who have been watching since ‘07, and the ones who found us last week. To the citizens of Nerdcrafteria, the team at EffYeahNerdfighters, the sub-reddit creators, and the mods in Our Pants. To the Lizzie Bennet lovers, the SciShow Fans, the Crash Course Students, the Swoodilypoopers supporters, and of course, in every way, to the Nerdfighters.
TO ALL OF YOU…WE ARE IN A WONDERFUL, FASCINATING, CAPTIVATING, GLORIOUSLY DEEP HOLE DEBT TO YOU AND WE LOVE IT DOWN HERE SO MUCH.
Thank you all.

We love you guys! Congrats <333

It was so amazing meeting him. He told me, “I can’t master the Nerdfighter sign. I might get kicked out of Nerdfighteria.”
I personally think he did a great job. Don’t kick him out!

Of course not! There is only one requirement for being a Nerdfighter and it is certainly not finger nimbleness (It’s wanting to be one, of course)! :)

Durr, Ransom Riggs. Nerdfighteria doesn’t kick people out. And even if we did, how could we kick out someone as awesome as you are for lack of finger dexterity? : D

Calling all Nerdfighters!

effyeahnerdfighters:

Hello fellow Nerdfighters! My name is Morgan and I am one of the contributors here at Eff Yeah Nerdfighters. I am currently conducting research for my honors thesis project at the University of Northern Iowa and I need your help! Click this link to fill out a quick, easy, and anonymous survey that will help me answer questions about a person’s personality traits and how these traits relate to the person’s behavior within online relationships. It should take no more than 10-20 minutes to complete the survey. In addition to filling out the survey, I would greatly appreciate it if you could reblog this post to give me a signal boost. Thank you so much for your help! DFTBA!
